Autism Services aim to address the core characteristics and deficits of those on the autism spectrum including:

  • Increasing communication- ability to request and make one’s needs known
  • Eye contact
  • Reading the non-verbal cues of others
  • Sharing attention with others
  • Turn taking and sharing
  • Functional play and leisure skills
  • Perspective taking
  • Reciprocal conversationy
  • Responding to others
  • Initiating interactions
  • Decreasing repetitive behaviors
  • Decreasing rigidity

Assessment, Behavior Services, or Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services:

  • Are based in behavioral analytic theory and practice in which all behavior is believed to be purposeful—or serve to communicate the client’s wants and needs
  • Aim to reduce problematic behaviors (tantrums, elopement, aggression, self-injury, perseverative behaviors, etc.)
  • Teach new skills to replace the problematic behaviors or make them irrelevant
  • Prioritize the use of reinforcement, or reward systems to increase more desired behaviors and skills
  • Involve parents and caregivers to learn behavior strategies to use outside of services with the client
  • Are provided in a more intensive format, typically by a Therapist a few times per week
  • The client’s program is developed and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who provides supervision to the Therapists and family
  • Provide on-going measurable progress toward goals to be addressed in therapy

ABA and behavioral interventions have been found to be effective in treating autism given:

  • ABA is able to be conducted across client’s different environments including in the home, community, and schools
  • Skills are broken down into more manageable and achievable tasks and goals
  • Concepts are explained and presented in concrete ways as individuals with autism often struggle with abstract concepts
  • Parent training and consultation is provided to help increase clients skills outside of sessions and decrease any problematic behaviors
  • Addresses client-specific motivators as individuals with autism may be motivated by different items and activities than their peers
  • Motivation is key- we strive to identify effective rewards to increase desired appropriate behaviors and decrease problem behaviors
  • Addresses generalization of skills learned across different environments, items or stimuli in the environments, individuals such as therapists, parents and caregivers, siblings and peers, and teachers

Focus on Reducing Problematic Behaviors

Behavior Services, often referred to as ABA services, focus on reducing a client’s problematic behaviors. Problematic behaviors are those that interfere with an individual’s functioning in their home, community and/or school environments. Behavior services serve to determine the purpose the problematic behaviors are serving the client, or what the client is trying to ultimately communicate to others by engaging in problematic behaviors. Behavior strategies are used by therapists and taught to parents and caregivers to decrease the problematic behaviors.

Direct Behavior Therapy

Behavior services are often provided in an individual 1:1 format with Therapists working directly with the client, and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) providing on-going supervision. Depending on the client and family’s needs, services are generally provided a few times per week and supervision by a BCBA during these 1:1 services a few times per month.

Services are provided as determined through an assessment process called a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). During the FBA process a behavior plan is developed as are goals for services and additional recommendations. In order to maximize the results of behavior services for children and per best practices, parents and caregivers are encouraged to directly participate in behavior services for their children.
